Description
The WarmGain Linear Power Supply replaces the switching power supply included with the WarmGain Phono Preamp with a linear supply built around a toroidal transformer, discrete bridge rectification, and a regulated 15V DC output stage. The difference between a switching supply and a linear supply in a phono preamp application is the power supply rejection ratio — how effectively the preamp circuit rejects noise introduced on the supply rail. A switching supply operates at 50-100 kHz and generates harmonics that fold back into the audio band at measurable levels. A linear supply does not.
Why a Linear Power Supply Changes What You Hear
The phono stage is the highest-gain stage in any vinyl playback system. A phono preamp applying 40 dB of gain amplifies power supply noise by the same factor it amplifies the cartridge signal. Reducing noise at the supply rail produces a proportional reduction in the system noise floor:
– Toroidal transformer core — lower magnetic stray field than EI-core alternatives, less hum induction into nearby circuitry
– Discrete bridge rectification with fast-recovery diodes — lower switching transients than integrated rectifier bridges
– Regulated 15V output stage with filtering capacitance — supply rail stays at 15.0V ±0.1V under varying load
– Input voltage range 100-240V AC — compatible with European and international mains without adjustment
– Short-circuit and overload protection — latching protection circuit requires manual reset; prevents supply damage
Compatibility
The WarmGain Linear PSU is a direct replacement for the WarmGain Phono Preamp’s included switching supply:
– Output voltage: regulated 15V DC
– Output connector: 2.5 mm barrel plug, centre positive
– Output current: 500 mA — sufficient for the WarmGain Phono Preamp at any gain setting
– Also compatible with any device requiring a 15V DC / 500 mA centre-positive supply
1.5 m DC cable. EU Schuko mains plug included. Backed by a two-year warranty.
